Brunswick Picnic

Picnic or Prototype? That is the question. Well a bit of both. Your FBST committee is looking towards more social activities and as a taster, we ran an experiment on Sunday 14th September. Blessed with good weather and some excellent food, a group of us enjoyed a very pleasant afternoon in Brunswick Square. Music was provided by Richard Vahrman, Andy Newell and Helgar Ditmar.

Plans are underfoot to run more events including a garden party in 2009. Watch this space.

Happy Birthday, Cornerstone

The Cornerstone Community Centre is our local community centre and it recently celebrated its 15th anniversary with a grand get together to display all of its activities. When it opened in a converted part of St John's Church, many people were not sure it would be a success- but they were wrong!

Currently it is used by 55 community groups and runs a children's centre - about 1,000 people attend each week. It has created a real partnership with the local community and shows how a large church can be converted for this community whilst still retaining an active congregation, even if this meets in a smaller space!

The children's centre was set up with the active support of our councilors. It is held on Wednesdays between 12:30 to 2:30 for children up to 5 years old. It also acts as a help and advice centre, and an experienced health visitor is always available for consultation.

Communal Bins in the Terrace and Square
Communal Bins Environment Committee Feedback.
(Latest: see a pdf copy of the leaflet that has just been sent round)
For those who could not attend the Environment Committee Meeting on Thursday - and a big thank you to those who were able to do so. Those attending must wonder why we ( and the Councillors themselves) have to put up with such extended Committee proceedings on many 'Petition' matters where the Councillors should be able to first elicit responses from the officers and then bring them to Committee in a grouped, orderly and time saving manner. It was surprising, for example, that all the responses to Petitions were made only by the Chair with no input by the rest of the Committee.
